Implementation recommendation for the fallback level of driverless passenger rail transport for rail undertakers and manufacturers

Congratulations! After three years of a very intensive scientific work at the Technical University of Berlin, the managing director of Adebahr Engineering GmbH, Frederik-Alexander Adebahr, has successfully completed the scientific debate on his dissertation about the topic of „ Implementation recommendation for the fallback level of driverless passenger rail transport with train attendant and teleoperator, with special consideration of safety aspects“ on 25.04.2024.

The dissertation focuses on the transition from regular train operation to the fallback level, if an ATO system (automatic train operation system) fails, the operational responsibility will be transferred - completely or partially - to humans. In particular, the operational hazards and their mitigations are analyzed for three main fallback levels: operation with train attendant, with teleoperator and with teleoperator and supporting train attendant.

Within a detailed difference analysis, a triple of newly developed interfaces (e.g. operating actions of the teleoperator at his workplace), changed conditions (e.g. reduced training effort of a train attendant in relation to a train driver) and 36 functions was evaluated. The functions belong to the TeSip function list of the SIRF and the GoA 3/4 function list from the X2Rail-4 project as part of the Shift2Rail program, whereby the used barrier points correspond to DIN VDE V 0831-103:2020-09.

For rail transport companies, the scientific work offers a substantial support for the introduction of the fallback level within driverless GoA 3/4 railway operations. In the dissertation, the focus on human reliability is particularly emphasized through the human factors method used in the ATO-Risk project and by interviews with the operation manager of the automated metro in Nuremberg.
